Symmetries and Reflections
Published in Paperback by Ox Bow Press (November, 1979)
Author: Eugene Wigner
Average review score:

Why can we discover laws of nature?
Although simply written, this is not a book for beginers. On the other hand it doesn't hurt to read it early and think about it for a long time, rereading it from time to time, in order finally to get the main point. Wigner points out that the basis for answering the question posed by him, 'Why is it possible to discover laws of nature?' is explained in every elementary physics text but the point is too subtle, is therefore lost on nearly every reader. The answer, he explains convincingly, lies in invariance principles. As an example, were local Galilean invariance not true it would have been impossible for Galileo to have discovered any law of motion at all. The same holds for local translational, rotational and time-translational invariance. Inherent in Wigner's argument is the explanation why the so-called principle of general covariance is not the foundation of general relativity, which also is grounded in the local invariance principles of special relativity.

Contrast this with the nonsense propagated in the first chapter of Samuelson's well-sold Economics text, where he asserts on the basis of a hokey picture that the difference between physics and the social sciences is not as great as it seems. In fact, there are no known invariance principles in the socio-economic sciences, and no corresponding laws of socio-economic motion (motion of money, e.g.). At best, there are intelligent gambling strategies like the equations for predicting option pricing, but these depend on market statistics that can change from one era to the next. Nor is it guaranteed that options traders will forever favor the dalta-hadging strategy and it's refinements. The last word: mathematical modelling and computer simulations are a completely different cat than approximate predictions based on laws of nature, like the laws of physics and genetics. The fact that we cannot yet (if ever) solve the Navier-Stokes equations for turbulence, which are grounded in local invariance principles and physical law, has nothing to do with our general inability to model human behavior mathematically.

The Tartar Wall

More than 100 years ago there was the Boxer Rebellion
This is a very entertaining novel and a "Must Read" for anyone with an interest in history and war. The story centers on the actions of American Army Lieutenant Ellis A. Rogers and his efforts to help free the foreign legations held hostage in the Chinese capital Peking (now Beijing). It tells of the daily struggles of the legation defenders and the life or death situations they face. This book is based on the true story of what occurred in that breif period of time at the turn of the century, and of the international expeditions that were formed to defeat the Boxers and the Chinese army.

To Soar With Eagles
This is long overdue, albeit, brief view of a long and lustrous career of a man who never received the accolades in this country that he should have. Many musical luminaries in the world have paid tribute to him, including his friend Miles Davis. This book covers about a 10 year period in his career, mostly in Europe. It details elements of his career and the friends he made while there. There is a section of the book with photographs of many of these frriends and some of his family.. Other members of my family have read the book and found it to be informative and an interesting story of this renowned classical musician who never really attained the kind of fame many of his comtempories received. I recommend it highly if you are looking for an autobiography of a remarkable man and just a small part of his career.

Tomorrow's Catholics Yesterday's Church: The Two Cultures of American Catholicism
Published in Paperback by Triumph Books (June, 1995)
Author: Eugene Kennedy
Average review score:

An incredible analysis
Mr. Kennedy has the special insight of both a Catholic within the institutional system and outside of it. As a young adult Catholic struggling to make sense of the divide between the Church-as-institution's stance on social subjects and my own conscience (shaped and formed in large part from a Catholic upbringing based on compassion, social justice and the integrity of the person), this book has spoken to me more than I expected. Mr. Kennedy shed's light on the underpinnings of the Catholic Church as institution, and his insight has allowed me to better understand the why and the how of my own Church's decisions. Like any "second culture Catholic" as Kennedy calls it, I am happy to see an intelligent, logical book in which historical fact and social context are wrapped together to give an accurate face to the American Catholic church, and it's people.

Un Chapeau de Paille D'Italie
This book is a Vaudeville about a man on his wedding day, trying to find a certain Itaian Straw Hat, which leads to many complications. I really liked this book, and I thought it was hilarious. It kept me entertained all the way through, and I had a lot of good laughs. The characters are very stereotypical, like the very protective father-in-law, but that just adds to the play's humor.

Exciting true to life accounts on/under the worlds oceans.
At times, a man's existence must survive on the blade-thin edge of danger. Voyage with Cole Cronan, as he seeks freedom from the strait jacket of society, living on the fringe of society's outposts. From king crab fishing the brutal icy water of the Bering Sea, where Death's screeching howl informs him it's time to leave, to the warm seductive currents of the South China Sea working in the hazardous profession of the hard-living, pushing the envelope, commercial deep sea divers. His adventure roams from a steaming jungle river in a dugout canoe traveling to an Iban longhouse, former head hunters of Borneo; flying to Portsmouth England in the dead of winter for diving in the bitterly cold North Sea; to living at the paint peeling former colonial mansion known as the Mitre Hotel, home to a wide assortment of the diving industry's rogues and roustabouts in Singapore. This course leads to the treacherous full moon tides and murky waters off Bombay in the Arabian Sea. Cronan will test the core of his existence to survive a date with destiny - a stranded saturation diving bell.....300 feet underwater.
